Batch 2: Bottled and ready for sale on August 24!

It’s Bittermens philosophy not to actively solicit reviews or pieces in the press. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but for us, seeing a piece that we “placed” or a review that we provided free samples for just feels a little insincere. Of course, if you want to write something about Bittermens, that’s fantastic and we’ll give you access to all of the information you could want (aside from our formulas)!

There are a few little things that we’d like people to know about Bittermens, especially if you’re planning on writing something about us…

Avery and Janet Glasser started started making bitters in 2007, Since 2009, we’ve been a Delaware S Corporation. We started making the Mole while living in San Francisco, came up with the Grapefruit and Tiki while living in New York City and the Boston Bittahs when we came to Boston.

Bittermens is currently a three-person operation: Avery and Janet run the business and make the bitters, though we now have a production associate who helps with each batch. We also get by with a lot of help from our friends.

Our first bottles were made available for sale in 2009 through a partnership with The Bitter Truth of Germany. This relationship ended in July, 2010.

Bittermens is now the sole producer of our formulations. All of the products we make are sold in our classic cobalt blue bottles. Some bottles from the partnership with The Bitter Truth will be in the market through the end of the year while existing stock is sold.

We are non-potable, which means that the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau certified our products as food products, not alcoholic beverages. As food products, they can be sold in grocery stores or purchased on the Internet and shipped to any state in the US (and overseas) just like vanilla extract.

Bittermens is now produced in Somerville, MA at a commercial kitchen that we lease from the amazing Taza Chocolate, supplier of our cacao, where we produce everything by hand.

We are Bittermens, not Bittermans, Bittermen’s or Bitterman’s. If you need to make our company name into a possessive, it’s Bittermens’, not Bittermen’s. Bittermens’s is also grammatically correct, but it looks really weird. We don’t know why we’re so obsessive about the correct use of the possessive – it probably stems from a stint on our college newspaper. Did we just break out in rhyme there?

Barbacks for Business

Do you need help crafting your marketing messages, managing your online presence or handling regular administrative tasks? Bittermens now offers a Barbacks for Business service for bartenders, bars and other cocktail industry insiders.

Non-Potable is a Good Thing

All of our bitters have been classified by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau's Non Beverage Product Laboratory as non-potable flavorings. Why is this important? It means that since they are not considered "beverage alcohol", our bitters can be shipped to any state without restriction.

Meet Team Bittermens
